The Year 2019 was great for AMD, as it released the Zen 2 based 3000 series CPU which just destroyed the Intel Consumer and HEDT line-up, but in 2020 AMD is planning to beat the intel in Laptop/Mobile Segment too, by their Zen 2 based 4000 Mobile series CPU code-named “Renoir”
AMD launched it’s Ryzen 4000 APU lineup for both gaming laptops as well as the budget desktop space in CES 2020. These CPUs dubbed “Renoir” will leverage the 7nm Zen 2 design instead of the 12nm Zen+ cores that the 3000 series Picasso chips feature. As such, it expected to have a hefty single-core boost, better gaming performance as well as a more efficient TDP.
The graphics side although supposedly will retain the Vega graphics core, it’ll be beefed up with a higher core count.
and also include LPDDR4X support up to 32 GB, 5x lower power state entry/exit latency, and 20% lower SoC power consumption.
Let’s start with the Name’s like always there will be Ryzen 3, 5 and 7 but this time there will also be a Ryzen 9 series chip, which is expected to go head-on with the Core i9- mobile series chips
Here is a List for AMD SKU’s Launched at CES 2020
AMD Ryzen 4000 15W SKU(U Series)
|Processor Name||Core/Threads||Base/Boost Clock||Cache||GPU Core||GPU Frequency|
|AMD Ryzen 7 4800U||8/16||1.8 GHz/4.2 GHz||12 MB||8||1750 MHz|
|AMD Ryzen 7 4700U||8/8||2.0 GHz/4.1 GHz||12 MB||7||1600 MHz|
|AMD Ryzen 5 4600U||6/12||2.1 GHz/4.0 GHz||11 MB||6||1500 MHz|
|AMD Ryzen 5 4500U||6/6||2.3 GHz/4.0 GHz||11 MB||6||1500 MHz|
|AMD Ryzen 3 4300U||4/4||2.7 GHz/3.7 GHz||6 MB||5||1400 MHz|
AMD Ryzen 4000 45W SKU(H Series)
|Processor Name||Core/Threads||Base/Boost clock||Cache||GPU Core||GPU Frequency|
|AMD Ryzen 9 4900H||8/16||3.3GHz/4.4GHz||12MB||8||1750MHz|
|AMD Ryzen 7 4800H||8/16||2.9 GHz/4.2 GHz||12 MB||7||1600 MHz|
|AMD Ryzen 5 4600H||6/12||3.0 GHz/4.0 GHz||11 MB||6||1500 MHz|
The Ryzen 7 4800H and Ryzen 9 4900H have the same core/thread count but the Ryzen 9 has more powerfull cores and better Clock speeds
Benchmarks for all the chips are not available yet but, it is available for top of the line series, the Ryzen 7 4800U and 4800H(as of now, although Ryzen 9 4900H is going to be released)
The Ryzen 7 4800U
Cinebench shows 4 percent better in single-thread performance, 90 percent better in multithread cases,
3D Mark Time Spy shows 28 percent better for graphics.
Content creation workloads show nearly 40% in Handbrake transcode, 49% in Adobe Premiere Pro, 45% in Chief Design Home Architect, and 27% in PCMark 10 Digital Content Creation workloads when compared to Intel’s closest competitor, the comparably specced Core i7-1065G7 from the company’s latest 10nm Ice Lake lineup.
In gaming also the Ryzen 4800U was able to beat the Intel 1065G7
It is also noted by AMD that the new Ryzen 4000 chips are twice as power-efficient compared to the second-generation Ryzen chips, largely due to the gains from jumping from the 12nm to the 7nm process.
The Ryzen 7 4800H
Cinebench R20 Single-Core showed a 5% lead while R20 Multi-Core showed a 46% gain for the 4800H. 3DMark Fire Strike Physics showed a 39% gain over the 9750H and Content creation platforms like Premiere Pro encoding was also benefited by 25%. when compared to the Intel Core i7-9750H
What’s more interesting is that AMD claims that the Ryzen 7 4800H is up to 13% better than the 8 core 8 thread 95 W intel Core i9-9700K in gaming performance which is a desktop CPU
If these benchmarks are repeated in the real world performance then intel will have nowhere to go it has already lost the consumer series, HEDT, and server-grade to the intel and if the benchmark remains the same then intel will again be beaten by AMD
There is a pattern followed by the AMD, it was able to beat the Intel’s higher grade CPU using a lower grade CPU like
the Threadripper 3970X was beating the Xeon series(HEDT from AMD and Server grade from Intel), the Ryzen 9 3950X was able to beat the 10980XE(consumer series from ADM and HEDT from Intel) and now the Ryzen 7 4800H was able to beat the Core i7-9700K(mobile Chip from AMD and Desktop Chips From intel).
All this Hype and still the performance for Ryzen 9 4900H is not out, the H series Flagship From AMD.
AMD says that the first AMD Ryzen 4000 series laptops will arrive from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and other companies starting in Q1 2020.
Laptops like the Asus Zephyrus G14, Asus Zephyrus G15, Asus TUF A15/A17 are already being released with the Ryzen 4000 CPU’s
