Intel first announced about the Intel 10th gen Comet Lake-H during CES 2020 just hours before AMD’s Ryzen 4000 announcement. Intel Hopes to Take on the Ryzen 4000 Series with the 10th Gen H-series CPU’s. Intel released 6 New CPU’s with the 4 of them being able to cross the 5GHz mark. Here’s a rundown of Intel’s new 10th gen H-series product line and some of the new features heading our way.
Intel 10th Gen CPU Specification Table(45 Watt TDP)
|Core i9-10980HK||8/16||2.4/5.3GHz||16MB||Intel UHD 630 iGPU|
|Core i7-10875H||8/16||2.3/5.1GHz||16MB||Intel UHD 630 iGPU|
|Core i7-10850H||6/12||2.7/5.1GHz||12MB||Intel UHD 630 iGPU|
|Core i7-10750H||6/12||2.6/5.0GHz||12MB||Intel UHD 630 iGPU|
|Core i5-10400H||4/8||2.6/4.6GHz||8MB||Intel UHD 630 iGPU|
|Core i5-10300H||4/8||2.5/4.5GHz||8MB||Intel UHD 630 iGPU|
The most interesting and the most advertised thing about the Intel 10th gen CPU’s are they are capable of going beyond the 5GHz in single-core boost, well it can when certain conditions are met, Out of the 6 CPU released 4 are capable of overclocking up to 5GH or above, the Core i9-10980HK, Core i7-10875H, Core i7-10850H, and Core i7-10750H, are the one capable of it.
It is made possible by using the TVB or thermal velocity boost.
With TVB the Core i9-10980HK is the Fastest Mobile CPU(In terms of Clock speed) as of now.
Also, Intel Offers to Compare the 10th Gen against the 7th gen, assuming that they would be the one who would be looking for an upgrade this year.
However, do note that the 10th gen is paired with RTX 2070 or 2080 while the 7th is paired with GTX 1070 or 1080
Thermal Velocity Boost
The Thermal Velocity Boost(TVB), is a concept which can further boost the clock speed when certain conditions are met, to put it simply TVB Can overclock the single-core by 200MHz is the CPU temperature is lower than 65 °C and if enough turbo power budget is available.
TVB works simultaneously with Turbo Boost Max, which identifies the processor’s fastest cores and directs workloads accordingly.
TVB is supported on all 10th gen Comet Lake-H SKUs except the Core i5-10400H and the Core i5-10300H.
But even if the TVB is capable of 200MHz we don’t see it in all the processor, the Core i9-10980HK is the only one which can boost up to 200MHz, and if the temperatures are between 65 °C and 85 °C, TVB can allow only a 100 MHz boost, for the Core i7-10850H TVB only allows up to 100MHz
So There are chances that TVB would never work if the Laptop has bad thermals, so it is better to look at the number before the TVB
Without the TVB The max Turbo Boost of the core i9-10980HK is 5.1GHz single-core and 4.4GHz all-core boost, and for the Core i7-10850H, the Turbo Boost 5 GH and about 4.4 GHz all-core boost
The Intel 10th gen series, will be based on Intel 400-Series chipset and will offer a max of 40 PICe Gen 3 Lanes, it would have better if they started offering the Gen 4 on 10th series, but they didn’t, out of the 40 PCIe lanes, 16 will be coming from CPU, and the rest will depend on the Chipset being used.
The 10th gen Series can support up to 128 GB of DDR4-2933 RAM, but according to Intel, support for DDR4-3200 is technically possible.
However, that choice is being left to the OEM and is available only for the fully unlocked Core i9-10980HK SKU.
The Intel 10th gen Comet Lake-H Series is led by the Flagship Core i9-10980HK, which is an 8-core 16-thread fully unlocked Processor, then we have the Core i7-10875H which is again an 8Core 16Thread Processor but is not unlocked, then there is a 6 core 12 Thread core i7-10850H the is partially unlocked, then we have the core i5-10400H and 10300H
Upcoming Laptops with Intel 10th Gen Processors
Intel is expecting around 30 thin and light notebooks and more than 100 designs using the Comet Lake-H parts.
There are Some Amazing laptops like Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 which is going to be powered by intel 10th gen CPU
How they perform against the Ryzen 4000 series is still something we look forward to
Starting with one thing, Intel offered to compare its 10th gen against the 7th gen to show a significant improvement, which is great, as the 7th gen came almost 3 years and 3 years is a good time to change/upgrade a laptop, also there is a considerable increase in performance almost by 2-3 folds.
And with the 10th gen one thing is confirmed for sure that Intel is going to be the best in terms of single-core performance, but about the multi-core, nothing can be said, until we get some real-world benchmark’s
