Now is the time we have both of the best SoCs From Qualcomm And Apple.
The 2021 Flagship SoC, from Qualcomm, is finally unveiled the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, it has some amazing features like Triple ISP, X60 5G Modem, and so on, and we already have the Apple A14 Bionic, powering the iPhone 12 series.

But the question is still there, which one is better the Snapdragon 888 vs A14 Bionic.

Starting with the Snapdragon 888, it has a 1+3+4 Core structure, with the Prime core being the new ARM Cortex-X1 Core, a new type of ARM-based core, If you are unaware, ARM designed a new high-performing CPU core called Cortex-X1 to compete against Apple’s A-series chips, Qualcomm is the first chipmaker to implement this design on their mobile SoC.
The 1X Prime Core(Cortex-X1) is clocked at 2.84GHz.
3X Performance Cores(Cortex-A78) are clocked at 2.4GHz.
4X Effeciency Cores(Cortex-A55) are clocked at 1.8GHz.
The Cortex-A78 is also a new addition to the lot, but the Cortex-A55 is now three years old, and it’s very disappointing to See Qualcomm still using it.

Coming to the Apple A14 Bionic, it has a 2+4 Core Structure, an ARM-based, Apple-Design Hexa-Core CPU, Built on the 5nm fabrication process by TSMC.
Last year’s Lightning and Thunder Cores are replaced with 2 High-Performance Firestorm Cores and 4 Power efficient Icestorm Cores.

The Clock speed of the Big Scores is in Single thread scenario, when both the Big Cores are active they perform at 2.89GHz, which is still amazing, For comparison, its 17% faster than the last years A13 Bionic, and still maintains a healthy 25% faster performance than the latest Snapdragon 888 SoC.

Snapdragon 888(Adreno 660 GPU)

Snapdragon 888 features the new Adreno 660 GPU, which as stated by Qualcomm is 35%, than the Adreno 650 GPU on Snadragon 865, and at the same time is 20% more power-efficient.
Even though Snapdragon 865 had 144Hz Display support, but it was unable to sustain high refresh-rate gaming for a longer time.

But with the Adreno 660, performance for high refresh-rate gaming for a long time is going to get better, without the drive getting abnormally hot

Apple A14 Bionic(Apple 4-Core GPU)

Coming to Apple. it features an Apple-designed, 4-Core GPU, it has an improvement of around 20% over the last years A13 Bionic.

If we look at the Antutu benchmark then the Snapdragon 888 has a better GPU, than the A14 Bionic, and even in real-world performance, 888 is a better option as the smartphones powered by it will most probably at least have a 90Hz display, instead of the 60Hz on the iPhones.

The Biggest Reason for this performance difference is the efficiency cores, the Icestorm cores are almost 4X faster and 3X more efficient than the Ancient Cortex A-55 used in the Snapdragon 888, which results in the 8 Core 888 losing to the 6 core A14 Bionic.

So obviously the A14 is much better in terms of raw CPU performance.



Snapdragon 888(Spectra 580)

ISP has always been a strong point for Qualcomm Flagships, and With Spect 580 in Snapdragon 888, it going to get even stronger, as stated by Qualcomm it has 35% faster performance and a Triple ISP architecture.
To put that into number, it can capture 2.7 gigapixel per second with ease.
Alo due to the Triple ISP setup, it can take 28MP each from a triple camera setup, with all of them having same type of features and sensor stabalization.

Also with Spectra 580, we get the options to record 4K HDR videos from all thee three camera sensor simultaneously.
All of this is possible because of parallel processing through triple ISPs, Also due to Triple 14-bit ISP, we can now switch between primary, ultra-wide, and telephoto lens smoothly.
The new Low Light architecture from Qualcomm lets to take bright shots in extremely low light conditions(0.1 Lux)

Apple A14 Bionic

There is not much information on the Apple-Designed ISP used in the A14 Bionic, all we know is that the new ISP can capture “unprecedented detail, texture, and minimal noise”.

As for Comparisons
The iPhones are still unmatched in Video Capturing.
But with all the features Spectra 580 there can be a new king in Image Capturing.


Snapdragon 888(Hexagon 780)

The Qualcomm Hexagon 780 on Snapdragon 888, can process 26 TOPS (trillion operations per second).

Apple A14 Bionic(16-Core Neural Engine)

The 16-Core Neural Engine can only process up to 11 TOPS.

Qualcomm is better than Apple in terms of AI and ML.

Modem and Wireless Connectivity

Qualcomm has always been the best in smartphone Modem and wireless connectivity and is still the best.
The Snapdragon 888 has the latest X60 5G Modem(5G Download/Upload: 7.5Gbps/3Gbps)
Also its WiFi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.2 Ready, and also supports NavIC.

The Part which makes the X60 better than the X55 is that the X60 now supports 5G carrier aggregation across FDD and TDD spectrums.
Which makes the 5G connectivity much better as compared to the X55.

In terms of RAW GPU/GPU power than the A14 is the clear winner, completely thrashing the Snapdragon 888, 888 is better in terms of AI and Modem, and nothing can be said about the ISP as of now without any Snapdragon 888 in hand.
But overall as every year the Apple A14 Bionic seems to be the winner.
