This post will be about undervolting your laptop/Pc using the Throttle Stop app

First lets see what is undervolting.

Undervolting is the process in which the voltage given to the CPU is decreased to a certain safe value to get the max performance out of the CPU

Why Undervolting is need

Usually, when the CPU is configured for a laptop or the settings in the motherboard for a Desktop, the applied voltage is higher than the voltage needed by the CPU to run properly, and as more voltage is given to the CPU, more heat is generated thus decreasing ht performance

In undervolting the voltage is reduced to a certain minimum, thus reducing the heat generated and maximizing the performance

For undervolting mainly two software can be used the Intel XTU and Throttle Stop

The XTU is the Easy way and Throttle Stop is a bit difficult way

Today we will be undervolting using the difficult way, using the Throttle Stop

if you want to use a video as a reference you can use this one

But if you want a detailed and step by step guide then follow the instruction bellow

Step by Step Guide

First, you have to download the Throttle Stop, you can use this link to download, Throttle Stop

Now extract the setup, in the video, I have not extracted it, but if you want you to use it regularly then it will be better to first extract it

Then Open the EXE file named ThrottleStop.EXE

You will get some warning type of pop-up just approve of them

Set the Speed Shift to 63 or 32, it should be less than the current number and should come in the power of 2, generally, it is 128 by default

Now Go the FIVR option for undervolting

Under FIVR controls the CPU Core should be selected by default, if not then select it, then Under CPU Core Voltage
select the “Unlock Adjustable Voltage” (make sure it is ticked).

Then change the Offset voltage near to the value you want

Now Select the CPU Cache under the FIVR control

Now-Again Select the “unlock Adjustable Voltage” option

Make the Offset voltage to the same as that of the voltage set in the CPU core

If a different voltage is used it will lead to problems

Now to save there are three options under saving
if you don’t want to save the voltage’s and only want to use the voltage setting until the time ThrottleStop app is working, then use the first option, this option will be useful when testing for the correct undervolting voltage

Now to save the setting after ThrottleStop exits you can choose the second option

to Save the voltage immediately use the third option, in this case, the voltages will be saved in the ThrottleStop file and will be used as default, for this Profile

Then Choose Apply then all the setting will be applied

Then Choose the Turn On under the main tab

Then Press the Save to Save the Setting in this profile

Now the undervolting is done

The voltage options can be changed for different purposes, like performance, mode, battery mode, internet mode and so on
in battery mode and internet mode is it advised to keep the speed shift to 128 and for gaming and performance make it to 64
and also in internet and battery mode, the offset voltages should be left as default(i.e 0)

Offset Voltage’s

Now The question is what should be your Offset voltage,
that you have to determine, all laptop series will have different offset voltage’s for best performance

you can just search on the internet, as what offset voltage will be best for your laptop

From my Experience for the intel from 8th gen onwards, the U series mobile(laptop) processors, you should start from around -50 millivolts and from that point for every 2-3 millivolts decrease do the benchmark you will get eh sweet spot for your laptop, and for the H series mobile(laptop) processors, start at around 100 millivolts. this method is called hit and trial method)

Warnings

  • Undervolting your laptop for long times will decrease the CPU life
  • it may damage the Motherboard
  • Always make sure to use the same offset voltage for both CPU core and CPU cache, or else it will lead to problems
  • The Offset voltage should always be negative, if set to a positive voltage then performance will go down
